Review – Happy Death Day

Happy Death Day is what happens when you mix Groundhog’s Day with a slasher film and should be a hit with genre fans.

Happy Death Day starts with stereotypical sorority girl Theresa (aka Tree) waking up on her birthday in Carter’s dorm after a night of hard partying. As her day goes on we see her dismissive and condescending nature as well as ignoring a dinner invite from her father.

After a party that night Tree is lured into a tunnel and brutally murdered. Then we see her wake up restarting the day ala Groundhog’s Day.

Originally announced in 2007 as Half To Death starring Megan Fox and produced by Michael Bay for Rogue Pictures, the project was passed on. Which I think fans got lucky, because the script was submitted to Blumhouse with a new cast and crew attached.

What works for this is it’s fun, fans get several deaths, the reliving the day aspect kind of becomes an in joke for Tree, at times when you think you have it figured out you’re proven wrong. It’s everything a horror fan could want. This belongs on any fan’s shelf next to films like Tucker & Dale Vs Evil and Tragedy Girls.
