Amazon Prime picks for June, 2019

Amazon Prime Picks
Amazon Prime Picks

As many of you know, I am a fan of Amazon Prime video selections. Each month they publish their upcoming video selection on their site, but what is worth seeing?

Here’s a list of my picks for the month:

The Boys could be absolutely terrible. I have no idea. But I love the trailer and I always though Karl Urban is a great tough guy. (See Dredd if you don’t believe me.) This is another Amazon original about superheroes that are jerks get their comeuppance by an avenging angel (Urban)! I think it looks like gory fun…so I hope that’s what I get!

Check it out later on in June.

Neill Blomkamp expoloded on the scene in 2009 with District 9...a alien refuge movie that reminded me of Alien Nation when it came out but its gritty violence is what people remember most from the film. At the time, many of us thought Blomkamp was the NEXT BIG THING…and then he gave us Chappie. Ugh.

Do you know ZAZ? Zucker, Zucker and Abrams is the team that single handedly created the subgenre of parody movies and this is the one everyone points to. But you can’t blame all the CRAP out there on this movie…which did a parody film right! Based on the AIRPORT series of films (which fell into self-parody with The Concorde: Airport ’79 in my opinion), Airplane! pairs great sight gags and funny lines with such speed, you may get whiplash. It also introduced us to the humorous side of Leslie Nielson…so there is that. Thank you, you wonderful guys from Shorewood, WI!

The Wraith is terrible. Awful.

So check it out and then listen to the “How Did This Get Made” podcast episode about it.

Oh, my gosh. So bad.

Well, going back to greatness, we also return to parody. Spaceballs is one of Mel Brooks’ greatest films. Now, I wouldn’t put Brooks in the “parody” camp with most of his films. This one, however, seems to fit in there properly. This was one of Rick Moranis’s greatest roles (gosh, I miss him!) and features John Candy as a Wookiee-ripoff.

The first five Rocky films bow later this month.

Rocky is an incredible film. Sly wrote and directed this film and when you see other “first” films from actors, particularly an actor that hadn’t had their big break yet, this is just amazing. It also introduced Carl Weathers to us all much to 80’s action movie fan’s delight. But I think Burgess Meredith steals the show here as an old, hard as nails coach with lots of heart. If you haven’t seen this film or skipped it to see the more pop entries, particularly 4, go back and check this out.

Rocky II is basically a continuation of the first film, but looks a little at Rocky now dealing with his newly found fame. An interesting, if not the most wonderful entry, in the series.

Rocky III, for my money, is the best entry in the series. Mr. T explodes as Clubber Lang, the unstoppable antagonist, while we get a good look at famous Rocky taking on half-ass contenders and avoiding the monster Mr. T portrays. Also features the famous Rocky vs. Hulk Hogan fight which is worth seeing just for that.

Rocky IV is kind of becoming the episode of the series everyone talks about. Creed 2 takes events of this film as its basis but is most famous as being the film that really took the Cold War and dramatized it. Sly had recently won the Vietnam war by proxy as John Rambo, so this seemed like the perfect followup. This movie introduced us to Dolph Lundgren as well, which may or may not have been a good thing…we’ll let you decide, but I LOVE Dolph’s underrated movie I Come in Peace aka Dark Angel, so I’m glad for that!

To wrap up the OG Rocky series, Rocky V is an embarrassment. But we do get Rocky in his hat. A lot.

Skip this one and see Rocky Balboa instead. Same basic idea, but made into a good movie. You could tell Sly took control back over his property.
