Amazon Prime picks – Halloween

Amazon Prime Picks

As many of you know, I am a fan of Amazon Prime video selections. So what thrillers and Halloween type picks do they have?

Here’s a list of my picks (and pans) for Halloween:

Nothing But Trouble (1991)

Here’s my question: Did anyone THINK of trying to keep Aykroyd in check? His friends like Chase and Candy didn’t. The studio let him roll. What were they all thinking: “We second guessed Ghostbusters so he must know what he doing?” What did a test screening of this look like? Did ANYONE laugh? It’s just horrible. 2/10

Coma (1978)

Jurassic Park author Michael Crichton adapted Robin Cook’s medical suspense novel into this late 70’s thriller. For film buffs, you get an early instance of Michael Douglas’s dark but heroic turns, a late Richard Widmark role, Rip Torn as a young, rising star and brief roles for Tom Selleck and Ed Harris (Ed Harris’s movie debut). The pacing is 70s so some would call it a slow burn, but once the score finally kicks in (nearly 45 minutes in), the flick has good suspense and some good understated tension. 8/10

Tom Holland’s Twisted Tales (2014)

I love Tom Holland. Love Fright Night. The original Child’s Play is great. I love that he doesn’t wear a Spider-Man suit.

This is a compilation of episodes of a failure TV series he did. Let me repeat: failure. You know how anthology movies there is usually “the good segment”? That is missing this time. By the time you get to the Pizza Guy segment you will wonder why you are doing this to yourself. 2/10

Rawhead Rex

Why did people recommend this film over the years? I believe I was punked. Yes, comes from a Clive Barker story. So did Nightbreed. Doesn’t mean you have to subject yourself to it. Monster movie that just isn’t that good. Acting was actually better than I was led to believe, though. 5/10

The Gate (1987)

I saw this first time as a young man when it came out and loved it. I wondered if it would hold up since I remember it wasn’t particularly brutal. It is as I remember: a good “first” horror movie for younger folks. Fun with surprisingly good effects and one of the best “not Poltergeist” 80’s suburbs horror films. I enjoyed the heck out of it. 9/10
