As many of you know, I am a fan of Amazon Prime video selections. Let’s look at some of their horror selections….
Here’s a list of my picks:
Wer (2013)
Deconstructive look at werewolves. Felt like how Criminal Minds would handle the myth, so AJ Cook’s involvement felt right at home. Serious role for Vik Sahay (from “Chuck”) was a surprise standout, but otherwise, it was simply a half step above the average werewolf movies and not up to the hype I was led to believe. Still, a good flick. 7/10
It’s Alive (1974)
John P. Ryan takes command of this movie about a mutant killer infant. You read that right. No spoiler. That’s the premise. Creepy sound effects are really what carries this one and while the out of its mind premise sounds just crazy enough on paper to be fun, it is dragged down with a very grounded script that really examines what could happen if this nutso event would occur. Utterly bizarre. Slow pacing hurt the overall film, but it has truly earned its cult status. 4/10
The Void (2016)
Squandered opportunity. The first half of this movie is fantastic. Great mysterious elements, decent blood effects and great practical monster effects. Then, the “big reveal” unspools for the second half of the film and really disappoints. Instead of thinking, “my goodness, this is a mess! How will this ever get resolved?” like you do in the first half, you think “my goodness, this is a mess!” I’m giving a positive review overall because of the strength of the first act, but I really couldn’t completely recommend it to anyone that isn’t a horror fan. 7/10
