In the new Shudder Original A Creepshow Holiday Special from showrunner Greg Nicotero based on a story by J.A. Konrath (Last Call) viewers are treated to a tale that captures the “Horrorday Spirit”.
The fare we’re treated to in this hour long episode is “Shapeshifters Anonymous” about an anxious man who finds an uncanny support group that can hopefully help with his unusual condition.
Starring Adam Pally (The Mindy Project, Life After Beth) and Anna Camp (Pitch Perfect, True Blood) this account of weird shit (both figuratively and literally) happening is sure to satisfy everyone from horror newbies to the diehards that came of age during the “Golden Age of Horror” in the 80s.
This is definitely a tale worthy of a stand alone episode and using our letter grading system gets an A from me. What worked for me was this had throwbacks we’ve seen throughout the Creepshow series akin to the iconic scene in “Something To Tide You Over” from the Creepshow film. You know the scene of the vibrant background with a comic panel border…I love that they keep using that in new ways especially in this twisted tale.
The score, setting, cast, and acting, as well as the FX from the legendary KNB EFX Group add to the classic feel. At times this echoes everything from Twilight Zone: The Movie to Tales From The Darkside.
I don’t want to say too much about this as I don’t want to spoil anything, so all I can say is gather the family around, drink some eggnog, do your best Ed Harris dancing impressions, and watch this immediately!

And remember kids, if you feel a chill that’s not the cold…you’re in the crypt!
