This week in the crypt we look at the Sundance selected and Shudder Exclusive film KOKO-DI KOKO-DA.
You can catch KOKO-DI KOKO-DA on Shudder beginning March 18th.
Written and directed by Johannes Nyholm KOKO-DI KOKO-DA takes viewers on a surreal 89 minute ride.
The film begins with a family dressed as bunnies (Leif Edlund, Ylva Gallon, & Katarina Jakobson) going for vacation. As we see them enjoying their time together, we see events unfold that lead to the main story.
As we move three years forward they are Tobias (Edlund) and Elin (Gallon) are unhappy and decide to take a trip to find each other again. This where we meet Mog (Peter Belli), a sideshow entertainer and his band of misfits.
Once Mog is introduced viewers are treated to a mix of horror, fantasy, and comedy. With the film mixing dark and humiliating slapstick with a bit of “Groundhog’s Day”.
What works for the film is the tension it builds, it’s well acted, and the scenery adds to it. There’s also some animated scenes that fit well with the tone of the film.
Where it falls short is at times the “Groundhog’s Day” stuff feels overdone. While I feel like it’s a metaphor for grief and fits the story, I also feel like it can be too much. Also the film is in Swedish and Danish which means subtitles. While I don’t mind subtitles I can see how this may be problematic for others.
This is one film that may take a while to find it’s audience, but it is a fresh film that feels new.
