This week in the crypt we take a look at the Shudder Original, VIOLATION.
You can catch VIOLATION on Shudder beginning March 25th.
Actress/co-writer/co-director Madeleine Sims-Fewer along with Dusty Mancinelli take viewers on a visually stunning ride on a not so fun family vacation in VIOLATION.
The film centers around Miriam (Sims-Fewer) and Calbe (Obi Abili) as they visit Miriam’s sister Greta (Anna Maguire) and her husband Dylan (Jesse LaVercombe).
Viewers will notice that while Greta & Dylan are in the “honeymoon phase”, Miriam and Caleb are far from it.
Over the course of an hour and forty seven minutes we run the gamut of emotions from happiness to dread to resentment and so on. We see the sisters have different recollections of certain events, betrayal, and more that make this your not so typical revenge flick.
What worked for me was it the acting, this was very well acted and the characters were believable. The scenery, while it was a beautifully shot film there was a nice touch of brutality. The soundtrack, while mostly operatic it helped build tension and dread.
Where it fell short was the run time, I think the film could have had the same impact if it was 10-15 minutes shorter. The timeline jumps might be confusing for some viewers. Also, do not expect this to be a straight forward horror film. It is more of a drama with horror elements.
While it may not be for everyone, this film will definitely have an audience in the Shudder subscriber community.
