This week in the crypt we look at the new Shudder Exclusive film FRIED BARRY. You can catch it beginning Friday May 7th on Shudder!
Written & directed by Ryan Kruger FRIED BARRY is a fever dream that may just be what the doctor ordered.
The film follow Barry (Gary Green) a drug addicted deadbeat who ends up being abducted by aliens. From there Barry changes and so does the viewers experience.
Clocking in at 98 minutes there’s a lot packed into the film as it spans various genres from horror to sci fi to arthouse to dark comedy.
While at times it feels like a David Lynch movie it lacks the pretentiousness of Lynch’s work and fans will enjoy Kruger’s expansion on his 2017 short of the same name. FRIED BARRY also packs some good gore, some cringe worthy moments and some nudity that fits the film and isn’t just nudity for the sake of having it in there.
Since we’re not ones to spoil or over analyze a film we’ll jump into what worked for us. The synopsis of the film, this could have taken a real dramatic approach, but instead they made something that hasn’t been overly done with this type of subject matter. The gore and Gary Green’s acting were great. The supporting cast also helped make the film believable.
Where it may fall short for some is the subtitles, a majority of the film is in English, but a few scenes are subtitled. Also the pacing at times can feel uneven, but that didn’t make or break it for me.
Pair this with Street Trash and Brain Damage to make for a weird what the fuck triple feature.
