• In 1895, baseball legend Babe Ruth was born. He is considered one of the greatest players of all time and holds several records, including the most career home runs (714) until 1974. He played for the Boston Red Sox, the New York Yankees and the Boston Braves and won seven World Series championships .
• In 1988, professional wrestler André the Giant defeated Hulk Hogan in a controversial match at The Main Event, broadcast live on NBC. The match ended with a double pinfall after André’s manager Ted DiBiase paid off referee Earl Hebner to replace his twin brother Dave Hebner. The match is one of the most watched wrestling events in history, with an estimated 33 million viewers.
