This week ECHG writer Adam Holtzapfel shares his thoughts on the short film Compulsion which played before She Was So Pretty: Be Good For Goodness Sake at Nightmares Film Festival.

 

 

As the film begins we see a man walking alone to his home. Once he enters we realize things are not what they seem. We come to find the man is almost like a superhero, he has a secret lair as well as a special outfit he wears to do his ungodly deeds.

 

Clocking in at just over 16 minutes, with little dialogue and a haunting soundtrack this is sure to be a favorite of dyed in the wool genre fans. Brian Sepanzyk leaves fans wanting more from this film. What works is the story, it’s a slasher but on a deeper level than the regurgitated 80s fare that a lot of us grew up with. It’s a film that would pair well with iconic films like Peeping Tom and Psycho, but also works well with current films in the same vein.

 

If you missed this at Nightmares Film Festival, you’ll be able to catch it at Days of the Dead in Chicago on Saturday screening with Machine Baby prior to the convention premiere of She Was So Pretty: Be Good For Goodness Sake.
